Plant Pots & Planters

A good home for a favourite plant.

A pot is part of the plant's everyday surroundings, not just its wrapping. Browse terracotta, ceramic and stoneware planters, textured finishes and pots with stands. Choose a shape that gives the planting room to show, then check the usable size, drainage and individual indoor or outdoor suitability before deciding where it belongs.

Measure the opening

The widest outer dimension may not be the size of pot that will fit inside.

Read the drainage details

Check whether you are buying a planting pot or a decorative outer container.

Match the setting

Outdoor suitability and frost resistance are product-specific; do not judge them from the material alone.

The Potting Room / Notes

Let the leaves lead the choice

A detailed pot looks different with a fine-leaved herb than with a broad, sculptural plant. Look at the outline of the foliage before choosing the planter: a plain shape can give busy leaves room to show, while an embossed surface may be the detail a simple plant display needs. Keep the practical fit in view throughout. The rim, interior depth and drainage arrangement matter every time you water, long after the first arrangement is made.

The Potting Room / Notes

Vary the height, keep the routine simple

Pots with stands bring a plant into a different part of the room or garden view. Before choosing one, measure the complete footprint and height, not only the pot. Check the stand's intended setting and allow space to lift the plant for routine care. A small group can use different heights while sharing a colour or texture, but each container still needs to work individually. Watering should not become a puzzle hidden behind a good-looking display.

The Byard’s choosing guide

Find the right pot, inside and out

Start with the nursery pot's width and height, then compare the planter's opening, depth and shape. Check the drainage arrangement before thinking about colour. A good-looking planter should also make the plant easy to inspect and water.

Back to the collection
How much space should I allow inside a decorative plant pot?

Compare the nursery pot with the planter's usable opening and depth, allowing room to lift it out for watering and checks. Tapered pots can be narrower at the base than at the rim. If only outside measurements are listed, ask for the interior dimensions before choosing a close fit.

Can I plant straight into every pot in the collection?

Check each product's description. Some pieces are decorative outer pots intended to hold a separate nursery pot, while others may be suitable for direct planting. Confirm drainage holes, liners and any surface-protection requirements; a pot stand changes the height but does not supply missing drainage.

Are terracotta and ceramic planters frostproof?

Not automatically. Frost resistance depends on the particular product, construction and finish, so the material name alone is not enough. Read the individual outdoor-use and winter-care guidance. If frostproof suitability is not confirmed, do not assume the pot can remain outside through freezing conditions.
