In-House & Thoughtfully Sourced

How We Build the Byard’s Collection

Byard’s is an independent homeware boutique built around two complementary ideas: creating distinctive pieces in our Derbyshire studio and finding thoughtfully sourced homeware from makers and suppliers whose work fits naturally alongside our own.

The result is not a collection restricted by where a product was made. It is a collection shaped by usefulness, materials, quality and character.

What We Create In-House

Creating products ourselves gives us control over the details that make something feel distinctly Byard’s.

Ideas can begin with a practical problem, an original illustration, a phrase that makes us laugh or a request from a customer. From there, we can develop the design, test it and refine how it will work in everyday life.

Our in-house work includes:

  • Original illustrated wrapping-paper designs
  • Printing wrapping paper to order in our studio
  • Personalised engraving on wood, slate, glass and terracotta
  • Designs created for specific hobbies, interests and recipients
  • Reusable tags, signs and practical personalised pieces
  • Products assembled or finished by hand where appropriate

Working this way allows us to make pieces that are difficult to find elsewhere. It also gives customers opportunities to add names, dates, messages and private jokes that turn useful objects into personal ones.

Why We Do Not Make Everything Ourselves

Making everything under one roof would sound appealing, but it would not necessarily produce the best collection.

Different materials require different skills, tools and experience. A glassmaker, ceramic producer, woodturner, textile specialist and natural-soap maker each understand processes that take years to master.

We would rather source a good product from someone with the right expertise than make an inferior version simply so we could call it entirely in-house.

The purpose of a boutique is not to pretend one person can make everything. It is to bring together things that belong together.

What Thoughtfully Sourced Homeware Means to Us

Thoughtful sourcing is not simply choosing products that photograph well.

Before adding something to the shop, we consider how it feels, how it works and whether it offers something useful. A product needs to make sense within the wider Byard’s collection rather than existing solely because it happens to be fashionable.

We look at:

  • The materials used
  • The quality of the construction
  • How the product performs its intended job
  • Whether it is comfortable and practical to use
  • How easily it can be cleaned or maintained
  • Whether its design is likely to date quickly
  • How it sits alongside our existing collection
  • Whether the price reflects the product itself
  • The information available about its manufacture and origin
  • Whether supplier claims can be presented accurately

No single point automatically decides whether a product belongs. Each item is assessed on its own merits.

Quality Is Not Determined by a Postcode

We are proud to work from Derbyshire and pleased to offer British-made products where they genuinely meet our standards.

However, a product is not automatically good because it was made nearby. Equally, an item should not automatically be dismissed because it was produced elsewhere.

Country of origin can provide useful information, but it does not tell the whole story. Materials, working methods, specialist knowledge, durability and production scale all matter too.

Our responsibility is to describe products honestly and judge them by what they actually offer—not rely on vague language or assumptions.

How a Product Earns Its Place

A potential product needs to answer a simple question: why should someone bring this into their home?

It might solve an everyday problem, bring warmth to a room, make storage easier or turn an ordinary routine into something more enjoyable. It may also make a thoughtful gift that feels personal to its recipient.

Products are stronger candidates for the collection when they are:

  1. Useful
They perform a clear function rather than adding unnecessary clutter.
  2. Well made
Their materials and construction are suitable for the way they will be used.
  3. Easy to live with
They can be cleaned, stored and used without needless complication.
  4. Distinctive
They have enough character to feel worth choosing over a generic alternative.
  5. Compatible with the collection
Their colours, textures and purpose sit comfortably beside other Byard’s products.
  6. Capable of lasting
They should remain useful beyond a passing season or short-lived trend.

Where In-House Work and Sourcing Meet

Some of the most interesting Byard’s products begin with a carefully sourced base and are then transformed in our studio.

A glass jar can become a personalised pantry container. A piece of natural slate can become a reusable label, wedding place marker or engraved keepsake. A terracotta pot can be finished with a name or message chosen by the customer.

This combination allows specialist manufacturers to do what they do well while we add the design, personalisation or finishing work that makes the final piece distinctly ours.

It also means customers can adapt practical homeware to suit a particular person, room or purpose.

A Collection Rather Than a Catalogue

Large retailers can offer thousands of products, but choice is not always helpful when everything begins to look interchangeable.

We want Byard’s to feel like a collection rather than an endless catalogue.

That means products need a reason to be here. A new item should complement what we already offer, fill a genuine gap or introduce a material, function or idea that adds something worthwhile.

Not every product needs to match perfectly. Homes are more interesting when objects have been gathered over time.

They should, however, share the same underlying values: usefulness, quality, natural character and longevity.

Honest Product Information Matters

Careful sourcing also means being clear about what we know.

We aim to distinguish between products made entirely in our studio, items designed or personalised by us and pieces sourced from external makers or suppliers. These are all valid parts of the collection, but they should not be presented as though they are the same.

Where information about materials, care, dimensions or origin is available, we include it to help customers make an informed choice.

If a detail is unknown, it is better to say so than fill the gap with impressive-sounding language.

Supporting Skill in Different Forms

Skill does not exist in only one kind of workshop.

It can be found in a hand-turned wooden bowl, a well-sewn linen bag, a precisely formed glass jar or an illustration developed into a repeating wrapping-paper design.

Some products carry visible marks of the maker. Others rely on repeatable production methods to create something practical, reliable and affordable.

We value both when the result is a product that performs well and deserves its place in the home.

The Byard’s Approach

Our aim is simple: to offer proper things for everyday life.

Sometimes that means starting with a blank sheet of paper and creating something entirely in-house. Sometimes it means finding a product made by someone with specialist knowledge. Sometimes it means taking a sourced object and adding our own design or personalisation in Derbyshire.

What matters is the finished piece—how it looks, how it works and whether it will continue to be useful.
