Then look at height from the place you will sit, not only from across the room. A lamp beside an armchair has a different relationship to the eye and page from one on a console, so let the intended position guide the proportions.

How big should a bedside table lamp be?

Choose a size that leaves room for the things you use beside the bed, with the shade’s width fitting comfortably into the available space. Consider the height from your seated position and whether the switch is easy to reach. Measure the shade as well as the base before ordering.

Are all table lamps suitable for reading?

No. Reading suitability depends on the lamp's light distribution, the compatible bulb and where it sits in relation to the page. A decorative shade may create atmosphere without enough useful light for close tasks. Check the individual product details and choose with that activity in mind.

Can I put a table lamp on a dimmer?

Only when the lamp, bulb and dimming control are compatible and the manufacturer permits it. A dimmable bulb alone does not make every lamp suitable for dimming. Check all the relevant instructions before using a dimmer, and ask for clarification if the listing does not confirm compatibility.
