Start with the table

A long board follows a narrow table; a round one leaves room for people to reach in.

Choose the serving surface

Flat boards suit bread and cheese. Pots and compartments make space for the smaller accompaniments.

Notes from the Kitchen Table

Let the shape lead the spread

A serving board changes how a meal comes together. A narrow platter carries bread along the table without taking over; a wider surface makes room for cheese, fruit and a little empty space between them. Add a small dish for anything that needs containing, then leave the handles clear. Our divided trays bring the same idea to smaller portions, giving nuts, crackers and accompaniments a place of their own.

Notes from the Kitchen Table

The pleasure is in the material

A pale ash surface, a darker line of walnut grain, the quiet colour of a stoneware pot: these are details you notice more with use. Choose one piece that sits naturally with your everyday plates, then build around it with linen napkins and simple glassware. There is no need for a matching set. A few different textures make the table feel personal, with enough room left for whatever is being served.

The Byard’s choosing guide

A board for the way you gather

Begin with what you like to serve and the space you have. The most useful platter leaves room for the food, a few serving utensils and the people passing everything around the table.

Which shape of serving board should I choose?

A long, slim board works well down the centre of a table, leaving space for plates along either side. Round boards suit a compact spread. If you serve several small accompaniments, look at trays with pots or compartments so each has its own place.

Can I use a serving board for chopping?

Choose according to the individual product's stated use. Some boards in the range are also listed for food preparation; decorative engravings, raised edges, stoneware insets and shaped serving surfaces have a different purpose. For regular chopping, start with the dedicated chopping-board collection.

Are all the boards made from the same wood?

No. The wider selection includes oak, ash, acacia, mango wood and walnut, alongside pieces combining wood with stoneware or slate. Each product page identifies its materials and making details. Natural grain and colour vary, and one-off pieces are identified in their own descriptions.
