The Living Edit / Notes

Start with how you like to use scent

Choosing home fragrance is partly about routine. Do you want to set aside time for a burner, or are you looking for a suitable diffuser format without a naked flame? Start there, then read the product's operating and placement guidance. Choose the scent after the format, so you can confirm that the two belong together. A bottle labelled fragrance oil should never be treated as a universal refill for every device in the house.

The Living Edit / Notes

A gift that fits an existing ritual

A fragrance gift is more useful when it fits the recipient's habits. If they already have a favourite burner or diffuser, check its requirements before choosing a refill. If you are giving a new device, make sure the compatible fragrance and any necessary accessories are clearly identified. Explore handmade candles as another format, while keeping the same principle: choose the scent for the person, and read the details of the individual product.

The Byard’s choosing guide

The right scent in the right format

Choose the device or fragrance format before the scent itself. A reed diffuser, electric diffuser and tealight burner have different instructions and refill requirements. Read the compatibility information on both products when buying a fragrance and a device separately.

Can I use any fragrance oil in an electric diffuser?

No. Only use oils or preparations explicitly compatible with that device, in the quantities the manufacturer specifies. Some products are intended for particular burner or diffuser types. Check both labels before combining them; similar names or scents do not confirm that the formulations are interchangeable.

Is an oil burner the same as a wax melt burner?

Not necessarily. Some products permit both uses, while others are intended for one format only. Follow the individual burner's instructions for the fragrance, tealight and any water requirement. Do not assume a dish-shaped burner can take every type of oil or wax preparation.

How do I choose a home fragrance as a gift?

Find out which format the recipient already uses and choose a compatible product in a scent family they enjoy. Check whether a device, refill or separate accessory is included. Fragrance preferences and household suitability vary, so avoid making assumptions about ingredients or universal suitability.
