Placemats in Natural Fibres & Slate

The texture beneath a well-laid table.

A generous woven edge, the grain of natural slate, a quietly unexpected shape. Our placemats give everyday plates a more inviting setting, with palm leaf, typha and seagrass alongside plain and engraved slate. Choose the material you enjoy looking at, then the size your table can comfortably hold.

Notes from the Kitchen Table

A little edge makes all the difference

The border around a plate is what gives a placemat its presence. Scalloped seagrass leaves a soft outline; round palm leaf or typha brings a quieter weave. Slate draws a cleaner line, particularly with a hexagonal or square shape. Place one setting on the table before buying a full arrangement, and use coasters to bring the material across to drinks without filling every inch of the surface.

Notes from the Kitchen Table

Texture can do the decorating

Plain crockery often looks its best with something tactile underneath. The natural weave or stone surface supplies enough detail to keep the rest simple: a glass, a folded napkin and food worth sitting down for. For engraved slate, leave part of the design visible beside the plate rather than covering it completely. Explore table linens for a softer layer that sits comfortably alongside both woven and stone pieces.

The Byard’s choosing guide

Choose the right placemat for your table

Size makes the biggest difference to how a placemat feels in use. Compare the plate, the mat and the space between seats before choosing a texture or an engraved design for the table.

Back to the collection
How large should a placemat be?

Measure your largest everyday plate, then check the placemat's stated width or diameter. Decide whether you want a visible border and whether the cutlery will sit on the mat or beside it. A larger mat needs more space between settings, especially on a compact table.

Are the woven and slate placemats sold in sets?

Both individual pieces and sets are available, and some engraved designs have several set sizes. Read the selected listing and variant before ordering. The collection also contains small matching accessories, so check the dimensions as well as the photograph when building your place settings.

Can I put a hot pan on a placemat?

Do not assume a dining placemat has the heat protection required for a pan taken from the hob or oven. Use a suitably rated trivet for that job and follow its instructions. Choose placemats for the plate setting and care for each material as directed.
