Candles & Candle Holders

Set the table. Slow the evening.

Candlelight changes the pace of a table or a quiet evening at home. Explore candles and holders together, choosing the candle type, fit and fragrance for the occasion. Look for pieces you enjoy in daylight too, and always plan a stable, suitable position with the space a real flame needs.

Match candle to holder

Check the intended candle type and dimensions; appearance alone does not confirm a safe fit.

Choose scent for the moment

Read the fragrance notes before combining candles, especially around food or in smaller rooms.

Plan the burning position

Use a suitable holder on a stable surface, clear of combustible materials; never leave flames unattended.

The Living Edit / Notes

Let the evening setting stay simple

A candlelit table does not need a crowded centrepiece. Begin with the dishes and the space people need to pass them, then choose a suitable holder that will not interrupt the view across the table. Keep decorative greenery, textiles and other combustible materials away from the flame. Choose fragrance with the meal in mind, and follow the product's instructions throughout. The atmosphere should come from an easy evening, not an arrangement everyone has to negotiate.

The Living Edit / Notes

Buy the pair with care

A candle and holder may look right together yet have the wrong fit. Start with the candle type and compare the listed dimensions, rather than choosing by style alone. Our candle holders include different forms for different uses, so read the individual guidance before pairing. When the candle is unlit, its holder can still contribute shape and texture to the room; when it is lit, keep the required clear space around it.

The Byard’s choosing guide

Choose the candle and its place together

A dinner candle, tealight and container candle each ask something different of their setting. Check fit, instructions and clear space before choosing the decorative arrangement. The holder's proportions matter, but safe use comes before the photograph you want to create.

How do I know whether a candle fits a holder?

Check the holder's intended candle type and any stated diameter or height guidance, then compare it with the candle. A taper holder is not interchangeable with a pillar plate or tealight holder. The candle should sit as instructed without improvised packing or an unstable arrangement.

Should I choose scented candles for a dining table?

Think about the meal and the people sharing it. A noticeable fragrance may compete with food, so read the candle's scent description and use your preferences to guide the choice. Where fragrance is not wanted, choose an explicitly unscented option rather than assuming a particular candle has no scent.

Where should I position a burning candle?

Use a suitable heat-resistant holder on a stable surface, away from curtains, paper and other combustible items. Keep flames beyond the reach of children and pets, and never leave them unattended. Follow the candle and holder instructions, including any spacing and maximum burning-time guidance.
