How Much Wrapping Paper Do I Need? A Wrapping Paper Size Guide for Rolls and Sheets

Running out of paper with one end of the parcel still showing is nobody’s idea of festive fun. This wrapping paper size guide compares an A1 sheet, a 1-metre roll and a 2-metre roll, with practical estimates for book-sized and shoe-sized boxes.

All Byard’s wrapping paper is 594mm wide and supplied rolled, never folded. The only dimension that changes is the length, so choosing the right format becomes much easier once you know the measurements of your gifts.

The Quick Answer

For the examples in this guide, we have allowed for a 30mm overlap at the main seam and enough paper to cover both ends of each box.

These are careful maximums for plain rectangular boxes, not a promise for every book or shoe box. Add extra paper if your boxes are larger, you prefer generous overlaps or you want to position a particular part of the pattern on top.

Wrapping Paper Size Guide: A1 Sheet vs 1m and 2m Rolls

Byard’s wrapping paper comes in three formats, all with the same 594mm width. That width is the short side of an A1 sheet and gives a useful, consistent starting point when measuring parcels.

A1 sheet: 594 × 841mm

An A1 sheet contains just under half a square metre of paper. It is a handy choice for one medium-to-large box, two neatly measured book-sized boxes or a small group of little gifts.

Choose an A1 sheet when you are wrapping a single present and do not expect to need much spare. It is also useful when different gifts will have different paper designs, as you can buy one sheet of each.

1-metre roll: 594 × 1,000mm

A 1-metre roll contains 0.594 square metres of paper. It gives you 159mm more length than an A1 sheet, which is useful for a third book-sized parcel or for a slightly taller box.

It is worth noting that a 1-metre roll is not twice the size of an A1 sheet. It contains roughly 19% more paper, so think of it as a little extra working room rather than a dramatically larger format.

2-metre roll: 594 × 2,000mm

A 2-metre roll contains 1.188 square metres of paper. It is exactly twice the area of a 1-metre roll and approximately 2.38 times the area of an A1 sheet.

This is the practical choice when several presents are going to the same person, a family’s gifts will share one design or you are wrapping up to three typical shoe boxes. The longer continuous piece also gives you more freedom with tall or unusually proportioned boxes.

Gift Wrap Dimensions: Sheet vs Roll

The main difference between a sheet and a roll is continuous length. Every Byard’s format is 594mm wide, so moving from A1 to 1m or 2m does not make the paper any wider.

The longer formats can be divided into several smaller pieces or kept as one continuous piece. However, a very wide box may still be too large for a single-piece wrap if neither required cut dimension will fit within the fixed 594mm width.

How We Calculated the Amount Needed for Each Box

You do not need advanced maths to estimate wrapping paper. For a conventional rectangular box, measure the length, width and height in millimetres, then use this simple calculation.

The basic wrapping-paper formula

  • First cut dimension: box length + twice the box height

  • Second cut dimension: twice the box width + twice the box height + 30mm for overlap

In compact form:

Required piece ≈ (L + 2H) × (2W + 2H + 30mm)

The paper can be turned through 90 degrees before cutting. The important point is that one of the calculated dimensions must fit within the 594mm width of the roll.

Why the formula works

The first dimension gives you enough paper to reach past both ends of the box. The second travels around the top, two sides and bottom, with a small overlap to close the main seam.

This is a reliable starting point for a regular box with square corners. Deep boxes, soft parcels and complicated shapes often need more paper because they create bulkier folds.

How Many Book-Sized Gifts Can I Wrap?

For this guide, our standard book-sized box measures 240mm long, 160mm wide and 40mm high. That is a useful approximation for a hardback novel, boxed journal or similarly proportioned gift.

Using the formula:

  • Length plus two heights: 240 + 80 = 320mm

  • Twice the width, plus two heights and overlap: 320 + 80 + 30 = 430mm

  • Paper required for one box: approximately 430 × 320mm

A1 sheet: up to 2 book-sized boxes

Place the 430mm cut dimension across the 594mm paper width. Two 320mm lengths then fit within the A1 sheet’s 841mm length, using 640mm in total.

This leaves a strip approximately 164mm wide and 201mm of unused length around the main cuts. Those offcuts are useful for small tags, narrow boxes or wrapping a tiny extra present.

1-metre roll: up to 3 book-sized boxes

The same 430mm-wide pieces can be cut at 320mm intervals along the roll. Three pieces use 960mm of the 1,000mm length, leaving around 40mm at the end.

This is quite an efficient layout, so measure before cutting. If any box is a little longer or deeper than our example, the third piece may no longer fit.

2-metre roll: up to 6 book-sized boxes

Six 320mm lengths use 1,920mm of the roll. That leaves approximately 80mm of length, plus the long narrow strip beside the 430mm-wide cuts.

For several books or uniform boxes, this format makes planning simple. Mark all six cut lines lightly on the reverse before using the scissors, rather than measuring each parcel separately as you go.

How Many Shoe-Sized Gifts Can I Wrap?

Our example shoe box measures 330mm long, 190mm wide and 120mm high. Shoe packaging varies considerably, so check your actual box before relying on this estimate, especially for boots or large men’s footwear.

Using the formula:

  • Length plus two heights: 330 + 240 = 570mm

  • Twice the width, plus two heights and overlap: 380 + 240 + 30 = 650mm

  • Paper required for one box: approximately 570 × 650mm

A1 sheet: up to 1 shoe-sized box

The 570mm dimension fits across the 594mm width, leaving only 24mm to spare. The 650mm dimension fits comfortably within the A1 length of 841mm.

That gives you one complete shoe-box wrap, with some useful paper remaining at one end. Because the width is close, cut carefully and check that the box is no more than 330 × 190 × 120mm.

1-metre roll: up to 1 shoe-sized box

One 650mm section fits within the metre length. The remaining 350mm is not long enough for a second shoe box of the same size, but it can cover a book-sized box if its required orientation works, or several smaller presents.

The advantage over A1 is therefore not a second shoe box. It is the longer offcut and the extra freedom to position the printed pattern.

2-metre roll: up to 3 shoe-sized boxes

Three sections of 650mm use 1,950mm of the 2-metre length. This leaves a 50mm strip at the end and only a small amount of spare width, making it a very efficient layout.

This estimate depends on all three boxes matching the example closely. If one is taller, add its measurements separately before deciding that three will fit.

How Many Gifts Does a Wrapping Paper Roll Wrap?

The honest answer is that box shape matters more than the number printed on the roll label. A flat book uses far less paper than a deep cube, even if both look like medium-sized gifts from above.

Use these quick rules when you do not yet have every exact measurement:

When in doubt, total the length required for each gift that will sit across the 594mm roll width. Then add 10% for trimming, pattern placement and the occasional change of plan.

A Three-Step Method Before You Order

Measuring first takes only a few minutes and avoids both shortages and unnecessary excess.

1. Measure every box

Write down the length, width and height in millimetres. Measure the actual gift box rather than relying on a product description, as external packaging can be larger than the item inside.

2. Calculate the cut size

Use (L + 2H) × (2W + 2H + 30mm) for each rectangular box. Rotate the result if needed so that one dimension fits within the 594mm paper width.

3. Add the lengths together

Once you know which cut dimension will run along the roll, total those lengths. Add at least 10% if you have several different boxes, are new to wrapping or want to centre particular motifs.

For example, three identical book-sized boxes need 3 × 320mm, or 960mm of roll length. They fit neatly on a 1-metre roll, but there is little room for an error, so a 2-metre roll may feel more relaxed if the boxes have not yet been measured precisely.

Allow Extra Paper in These Situations

The neat mathematical answer assumes efficient cutting and conventional folds. Real presents sometimes need a little breathing room.

Add approximately 50–100mm per parcel when:

  • You want a particular animal, name or illustrated motif centred on top

  • The design has a clear direction that you do not want to place upside down

  • The box has rounded corners or an unusual lid

  • You prefer a wider overlap at the main seam

  • You are using ribbon that needs a perfectly centred paper join

  • You are not confident that the box dimensions are exact

For soft clothing, toys or objects without a box, allow more than this. Placing an awkward present inside a plain recyclable box often uses paper more efficiently and creates a cleaner final shape.

Pattern Placement Can Change the Calculation

Byard’s designs begin as hand-painted watercolours or detailed pencil sketches, then become repeating patterns in our Derbyshire studio. The repeat means there is no single ‘correct’ cutting point, but you may still want a favourite motif sitting proudly on the top face.

Before cutting, place the box lightly on the unrolled paper and move it until the section you love is in view. Check the reverse to make sure you still have enough paper at both ends before making the first cut.

Personalised wrapping paper may need slightly more planning. If the design includes a face, name or message, allow spare length so that an important detail does not disappear beneath the parcel or into a folded corner.

Does 90gsm or 140gsm Change How Much Paper I Need?

The printed dimensions are the same for both paper weights. An A1 sheet is still 594 × 841mm, and the 1m and 2m rolls remain 594mm wide.

In practice, 90gsm is more flexible around tight corners and irregular shapes, while 140gsm creates a heavier, structured finish on square boxes. With 140gsm, accurate cutting helps prevent bulky overlapping layers, so avoid adding a large amount ‘just in case’ at every edge.

The quantity estimates in this guide work for either weight on regular boxes. If you are wrapping a curved or complicated item in 140gsm, boxing it first will usually give a neater result and make the calculation more dependable.

Making Useful Things from the Offcuts

An efficient layout rarely uses every millimetre, particularly because the paper has a fixed width. Keep the clean offcuts rather than discarding them straight away.

They can become:

  • Matching gift tags mounted onto recycled card

  • Paper bands around little boxes or jars

  • Decorative strips inside a plain gift box

  • Small folded envelopes for gift cards

  • Place cards for a birthday or Christmas table

  • A patch kept for repairing an accidental tear

The illustrated details often look especially charming at this smaller scale. A single painted bird, gardening tool or festive character can turn a narrow strip into a tag that belongs with the parcel.
