Choose the right shape and scale

Measure your plates, then allow room for cutlery and glasses before deciding on a placemat size. Round mats can soften a small table; square and shaped slate designs bring a more defined outline. Check the number included in each listing, as singles and sets serve different needs.

Woven fibres and slate need different care, so use the instructions for the material you choose. A placemat is not automatically a trivet for hot cookware; check its intended use before placing a pan on it. Finish with napkins or coasters that pick up one colour or texture from the setting.
